Le Marquis de Calon Segur St Estephe 2019 (750ml) (2nd wine of Ch Calon-Segur)
Country/ Region:
Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, France
Background:
Le Marquis de Calon Segur 2019 (750ml) is the esteemed second wine of the historic Chateau Calon-Segur, a 1855 third-growth estate in the Saint-Estephe appellation of Bordeaux, France. Crafted from younger vines, it offers a silky, fruit-forward expression with prominent Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends.
Winemaking:
Strict cluster and berry sorting occurs before the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve fresh, pure fruit characteristics and vibrant acidity. The wine is aged in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new, tailored to the specific vintage) for 17 to 20 months. This aging softens the robust tannins and adds layers of cedar, spice, and structure.
Grapes: Bordeaux Blend
Tasting note:
Deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur wafts out of the glass with fragrant potpourri, garrigue and Darjeeling tea scents over a core of redcurrant jelly, plum preserves and blackcurrant pastilles plus a touch of cracked black pepper. The full-bodied palate has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins with loads of freshness supporting the crunchy black fruits, finishing long and savory.
Food Pairing:
It pairs perfectly with rich meats, game, and hard cheeses. For example, pan-seared duck breast with a berry reduction or grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic.
